Teacher Drunk in Class . . . Again!

Math is, for many students, a very difficult subject. Imagine compounding that difficulty by being taught by a teacher who is not only drunk, but completely wasted! If you think the story is fiction, think again. At least that’s what police in San Tan Valley are saying. They claim that a math teacher at Poston Butte High School was under the influence during class last week. The issue came to the school’s attention after students called the main office to report that their teacher had been cursing at them and slurring her words, among other things. When confronted by the allegations of being drunk, the teacher initially denied drinking; she later admitted that she drank the night before, that morning, and while she was having lunch in her classroom. Half empty bottles of boozer were found in her purse. Police say the woman had been arrested the day before and charged with “super extreme” DUI. Finally, a statement from the police claims that the teacher was fired in 2011 from a teaching position in New Mexico for being drunk in class. She has been charged with consumption of alcoholic beverages in a public place. Additional charges may also be brought.

You might assume that this kind of behavior on the part of teachers is very rare, but while it may be unusual, we’ve had no difficulty finding numerous examples from other states and even other countries:

  • A teacher in Tulsa, Oklahoma was charged earlier this month with public intoxication during her first day on the job. She allegedly entered the local high school, failed to check in at the office, and walked into a classroom. At that point, it is alleged, she proceeded to remove her pants. Police say she admitted to drinking some vodka that morning.
  • A substitute teacher in Oklahoma County was arrested after she was allegedly found drunk and passed out in her classroom.
  • A British teacher was leading a school tour in Barcelona in June 2014. On the eve of their trip home, teachers reportedly went out for drinks, and ended up participating in a drunken brawl.
  • A Wisconsin elementary school teacher vomited and then passed out during her fourth grade students’ field trip to a bowling alley. The staff at the hospital to which she was taken say she admitted to drinking at 6:00 a.m. By noon, they add, her BAC was still more than three times the legal limit.

Shocked as you might be, “drunk in class” is apparently not all that unusual – even for teachers.
